What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how they solved a problem using objects, drawings, numbers, or words. They listen to another solution, decide whether it makes sense, and support their response with math evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student shows a solution with objects, a drawing, or an equation and explains why it works. The student checks a classmate’s steps, asks a useful question, and identifies an error or confirms the reasoning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may give only an answer and think no explanation is needed. They may call a different strategy wrong, even when it reaches the correct result. Some accept a classmate’s claim without checking the numbers or model.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “Mia says 8 + 7 = 14. She moved 2 from 7 to make 10, then wrote 10 + 4. Is her reasoning correct? Explain with a drawing or equation.”

Ways to Teach It
Partners build 9 + 6 with linking cubes, solve it two ways, then point to each cube move while explaining their reasoning.
Display two solutions for 13 minus 5 and ask, “Do both methods work? What evidence from the drawings supports your answer?”
Play Error Detective with cards showing correct and incorrect equations, and have students explain each decision to a partner.
Set up 12 pretend apples in two baskets, make a claim about the total, and ask students to prove or correct it.
