What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain why a solution works using clear steps, calculations, diagrams, examples, or known facts. They examine another person's reasoning, ask useful questions, and point out unsupported claims or errors.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student states a claim, organizes steps logically, and supports each step with calculations, diagrams, examples, or known facts. They can restate a peer's approach fairly, locate a weak step, and explain how to fix it.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a correct answer is enough, even when no reasoning is shown. They may call a method wrong because it differs from theirs, or identify an error without explaining why it fails.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Leo says 2/3 + 1/4 = 3/7 because he added numerators and denominators. Identify his error, find the correct sum, and justify your method.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 24 counters to build arrays, decide whether 24 has an odd number of factor pairs, and defend their claim.
Post two solutions to 3(x + 2) = 18 and ask students which is valid, where the reasoning changes, and why.
Play Error Detective with worked fraction problems; teams identify the first faulty step and replace it with a justified step.
Compare unit-price claims from two grocery ads, then have students defend the better deal and challenge one another's assumptions.
