What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how they solved a problem and use math facts, models, or examples to support their thinking. They examine another solution, ask questions, and point out sound steps or errors.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student supports an answer with equations, models, examples, or clear statements. The student checks another person’s method, identifies a valid step or error, and explains the judgment respectfully.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may give only an answer or list steps without explaining why the steps work. They may reject a classmate’s method because it looks different, or agree without checking the math.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Maya says 6 × 24 equals 120 because 6 × 20 is 120. Explain her error and find the correct product.”
