What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make a mathematical claim and support it with facts, calculations, diagrams, or examples. They examine another person’s solution, question unclear steps, and explain whether the reasoning holds.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student states a clear claim and supports it with calculations, diagrams, definitions, or examples. The student checks each step in another solution and explains any error precisely.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat an answer or several examples as proof. They may reject another method because it looks unfamiliar, or identify an error without explaining why it is wrong.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Jordan says a 20% discount followed by a 10% discount equals 30% off. Is Jordan correct? Use numbers to explain.”

Ways to Teach It
Use integer chips to test a claim about adding negative numbers, then have pairs build a visual explanation that works for every case.
Present two solutions to a percent problem and ask students to write which is valid, citing the exact step that supports their decision.
Play Error Detective with solution cards, awarding points for finding an error and giving a corrected step with a clear reason.
Compare two phone plans using tables, then write a recommendation that includes calculations and answers one possible objection.
