What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students solve a problem and explain why their method and answer make sense. They listen to a classmate’s reasoning, ask questions, and identify steps that are correct, unclear, or incorrect.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student explains a solution with drawings, numbers, objects, or clear words. The student listens to another method, checks each step, and asks a useful question. If reasoning is wrong, the student identifies the error and suggests a correction.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may give an answer without showing why it works. They may judge reasoning only by whether the final answer matches theirs. Some criticize the person instead of naming the unclear or incorrect step.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “Nia says 35 + 28 = 53 because 5 + 8 = 13 and 3 + 2 = 5. Do you agree? Show why.”

Ways to Teach It
Partners solve 24 + 18 with base-ten blocks, trade models, and point to the parts that prove each answer.
Ask, “Kai says 46 is even because it has 4 tens”; students write whether they agree and give evidence.
Play Reasoning Detective: teams inspect worked solution cards, mark the first faulty step, and explain a repair using a sentence stem.
Present two ways to split 24 crayons among six tables; students choose a fair plan and defend it with drawings.
