What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make a clear mathematical claim and support it with calculations, models, examples, or properties. They check another solution step by step and explain any agreement, error, or missing evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can solve a problem and explain why the method works, not just report an answer. They can compare two arguments, ask a useful question, and use a counterexample to disprove a false claim.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat an answer or several examples as proof. They may criticize the person instead of naming the exact step that fails. Some assume a different method is wrong, even when it is valid.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Maya says 3/4 is greater than 5/6 because 4 is less than 6. Explain her error and prove which fraction is greater.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs fraction tiles and ask them to prove or disprove, “Adding two fractions always makes a larger number.”
Post two solutions to 36 × 24 and ask students which is clearer, what is valid, and what needs revision.
Play Claim, Evidence, Challenge: teams solve a problem, present a claim, and earn points for evidence or a valid counterexample.
Compare two grocery discount offers, then write an argument naming the better deal and challenge a partner’s reasoning with calculations.
