What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect groups of objects and story amounts to drawings, numerals, and simple number sentences. They explain what each number means in the situation. They check the symbols against the objects or story.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can model a short story with objects, drawings, numerals, or a number sentence. They can explain what each number represents. They can check whether their answer makes sense in the story.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a numeral as a label instead of an amount. They may copy numbers from a story into an equation without considering what the numbers represent. They may also give an answer that does not fit the objects or story.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “Mia has 4 blocks and gets 2 more. Draw the blocks, write a number sentence, and explain what 6 means.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs counters and number cards, then have one student build an amount while the other matches the card and explains the quantity.
Show 3 + 2 = 5 beside an apple picture and ask, “What does each number tell us about the apples?”
Play a matching game using cards with object sets, numerals, and simple number sentences that represent the same amount.
Set up a pretend snack table where students count plates, add crackers, and explain how each number matches the items.
