What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students move between a situation and the numbers, symbols, and operations that represent it. They explain what each quantity means and check whether an answer makes sense in context.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a word problem, a student identifies the quantities and units, writes a matching equation, and solves it. The student interprets the result in context and checks whether it is reasonable.

Common Misconceptions

Students may combine every number in a problem without considering what each quantity represents. They may drop units, misread remainders, or give answers that do not fit the situation.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: “A class packs 137 markers into boxes that hold 12 markers each. Write an equation, find the number of boxes needed, and explain your answer.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs 53 counters and cups holding 8; students model, write 53 ÷ 8, and explain what the remainder means.

  2. Ask, “What does each number in 184 ÷ 6 = 30 R4 mean in a bus seating story?”

  3. Play Match Three with cards showing a story, an equation, and an answer with units; students find matching sets.

  4. Use a grocery flyer to price four identical items; students write an equation and explain the total cost and units.
