What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect numbers and operations to the quantities they represent in a problem. They move between a real situation and equations or models, then check whether the answer fits the context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can represent a situation with an equation, diagram, table, or model. They explain what the numbers and operations mean, use units correctly, and check answers with estimates or context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may calculate correctly but ignore what each number represents or leave off units. They may choose operations from keywords instead of considering the relationships in the situation. Some accept any computed answer without checking whether it is reasonable.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A 6-foot ribbon is cut into 8 equal pieces. Write an expression, find each piece's length, label the unit, and explain why the answer makes sense.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 3 cups of rice to divide equally among 4 containers, then measure, record an equation, and label the result.
Ask students to explain in writing what each number means in 24 ÷ 6 = 4 for two different story problems.
Run a card sort matching word problems, expressions, solutions, and unit labels, then have partners justify each match.
Have students plan the cost of four identical lunches from a $30 budget and explain whether their result is reasonable.
