What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students move between a real situation and a mathematical representation. They identify quantities, keep track of units, calculate, and explain what numbers and symbols mean in context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify the quantities in a situation and represent their relationships with an expression, equation, table, or graph. They interpret each value in context and check whether the result is reasonable.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may drop units, use numbers without identifying what they represent, or treat variables as labels instead of changing quantities. They may accept answers that make no sense, such as negative people or a cost smaller than the starting fee.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A taxi charges $4 plus $2.50 per mile. Write the cost for m miles, find the cost for 7 miles, and explain each term and unit.”

Ways to Teach It
Use grocery labels and play money to model total costs, then write an expression and explain each number and unit.
Ask students to explain how 3x + 5 could represent a real situation and what each part would mean.
Run a card sort matching situations, expressions, units, and written interpretations, then have pairs defend one match.
Plan a class snack budget using prices and student counts, then predict the total and explain whether the result is reasonable.
