What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students stay with a challenging problem, test strategies, and change course when a method does not work. They explain their thinking, work productively with others, ask focused questions, and use feedback. They set a specific math goal and check their progress.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student tries another representation or method when the first attempt fails. They explain their reasoning, use specific feedback to revise work, and track progress toward a clear goal.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think strong mathematicians solve problems quickly and without mistakes. They may repeat an unsuccessful method, accept peer answers without checking, or treat feedback as a final judgment.
How to Assess It
- Give one unfamiliar multistep problem as an exit ticket. Ask students to show two attempts, identify one change they made, and set one goal for the next problem.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs algebra tiles and a multistep equation; require two attempts, a strategy note, and one revision after peer feedback.
Ask students to write: What did you try, where did you get stuck, and what will you change on your next attempt?
Run a strategy-switch relay where teams solve challenge problems and earn points for testing a different method after an unsuccessful attempt.
Have students compare two phone plans, explain their choice, respond to a partner’s question, and revise their recommendation with new usage data.
