What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students notice patterns while solving several similar problems. They use those patterns to form general rules, explain their reasoning, and check whether the rules keep working.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given related calculations, students identify what changes and what stays the same. They write a general rule, test it with a new case, and revise it if needed.

Common Misconceptions

Students may claim a rule after checking only one or two cases. They may also use a shortcut outside the conditions where it works or treat a pattern as proof.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: Find the first four sums of consecutive odd numbers, predict the sum of the first n odd numbers, then test n = 10.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have students build growing squares with tiles, record each total, and connect the added odd numbers to the square numbers.

  2. Ask students to compare two solution methods and write where repeated steps appear and what general rule those steps suggest.

  3. Play Rule Detective with input-output cards, awarding points for finding a rule and verifying it with an unseen input.

  4. Have students calculate phone plan costs for several data amounts, write a cost rule, and use it to predict a monthly bill.
