What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students watch for calculations, steps, or relationships that repeat. They use the repetition to make a rule or shortcut, then test it with another example.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students notice when the same calculation or relationship appears several times. They state a useful rule, use it to solve a new case, and check that it fits earlier cases.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name the next number without identifying the repeated operation. They may confuse a step-by-step pattern, such as add 4, with the input-output rule, such as multiply by 4, then add 2. Some assume a pattern always continues without checking more cases.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: A machine turns 1, 2, 3, 4 into 6, 10, 14, 18. Find the output for 10 and explain your shortcut.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build growing figures with square tiles, record the tile totals, and write a rule that predicts the tenth figure.

  2. Ask students to explain: What repeats in your work, and how can that repetition help you solve the next case faster?

  3. Play Rule Detective with input-output cards, where partners identify the rule and test it on three new inputs.

  4. Compare weekly savings plans in a table, then describe how repeated deposits can predict each total without adding every week.
