What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students represent real situations with diagrams, tables, graphs, equations, or other useful tools. They use the model to solve a problem, interpret the answer, and check whether it makes sense.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose a useful model, such as a table, graph, diagram, or equation. They label quantities and units, solve accurately, then explain and check the result against the situation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose an operation from a keyword without considering the situation. They may ignore units, treat every relationship as proportional, or report a number that does not make sense in context.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: “A taxi charges $3 plus $2 per mile. Show a model for an 8-mile ride, find the cost, and explain why it fits.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups cups and counters to represent a $4 starting fee plus $2 per item, then write an equation matching the model.

  2. Ask students, “When would a graph be more useful than an equation?” Require one example and a comparison with another model.

  3. Play Model Match with cards showing situations, tables, graphs, and equations, with teams finding and defending matching sets.

  4. Use grocery ads to compare unit prices, create equations for total cost, and decide which purchase best meets a fixed budget.
