What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn real situations into drawings, objects, diagrams, tables, or equations. They use the model to solve, explain the result in context, and decide whether the answer is reasonable.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose a useful drawing, equation, table, or set of objects for a real situation. They label quantities, solve accurately, explain what the answer means, and check whether it makes sense.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may draw a picture that looks like the situation but does not show the needed quantities or operation. They may write an equation without labels, or stop after calculating without checking whether the answer fits the situation.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “There are 6 bags with 4 apples in each bag. Show two models, find the total, and explain why they match.”
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 24 counters and cups, then ask them to model equal groups in two ways and record matching equations.
Ask, “Which model best shows 3 boxes with 8 crayons each?” Students choose from three models and defend their choice.
Play Model Match with cards showing word problems, arrays, bar diagrams, and equations, with students finding sets that represent the same situation.
Use a classroom snack order, and have students model how many items are needed for equal bags before calculating the total.
