What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify repeated quantities, common factors, and familiar forms in expressions, equations, tables, and figures. They reorganize parts of a problem to simplify calculations or reveal relationships. They explain how the pattern supports their method.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can spot a common factor, repeated quantity, or familiar form and use it to simplify a problem. They choose an efficient method and explain why the rearranged expression or solution remains equivalent.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may notice number patterns but miss common factors or repeated expressions. They may distribute or combine terms incorrectly, or assume expressions that look similar are equivalent. Some students use a valid shortcut but cannot explain why it works.
How to Assess It
- Give the exit ticket: Simplify 4(2x - 3) + 5(2x - 3) without distributing first. Identify the repeated part and explain your step.

Ways to Teach It
Use algebra tiles to build 3(x + 2) + 2(x + 2), then regroup the tiles to show 5(x + 2).
Compare distributing and factoring for 6(3x + 4) + 2(3x + 4), then write which method is more efficient and why.
Play a card match game pairing factored expressions, expanded expressions, tables, and diagrams that represent the same relationship.
Model three identical restaurant orders with an expression, then use the repeated order structure to calculate the total efficiently.
