What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice how numbers, operations, shapes, and patterns are organized. They use place value, operation properties, and repeated parts to solve problems more efficiently.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can rewrite 18 × 25 as 9 × 50 or as (20 − 2) × 25 and explain why the value stays the same. The student can identify a useful pattern and apply it to a new problem.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may spot a visual pattern but cannot connect it to an operation or rule. They may change an expression’s value when rewriting it, or assume a pattern continues based on one example.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Solve 16 × 25 without the standard algorithm. Rewrite the expression using a helpful structure, then explain why your rewrite is equivalent.”

Give students base-ten blocks to build 3 × 24, then rearrange the model as 3 × 20 plus 3 × 4.
Ask, “What structure do you notice in 99 × 6, and how can it help you calculate mentally?”
