What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide what a problem is asking, then use objects, drawings, words, or numbers to work toward an answer. They keep trying when a first idea does not work.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can act out or model a simple problem, choose a strategy, and explain the steps. If the first attempt fails, the student tries another approach and checks the result.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may grab numbers from a problem and act without deciding what is being asked. They may stop after one attempt, or think a wrong answer means they cannot solve it.
How to Assess It
- Give students six counters and say, "Show two different ways to put these into two groups." Ask them to explain what they tried when stuck.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs counters and two paper plates, then ask them to find several ways to share eight counters between the plates.
Ask, "What can you try when your first idea does not work?" Record student responses on a class strategy chart.
Play Mystery Bag: students ask questions, draw pictures, and test guesses to determine how many cubes are hidden.
Set up a pretend snack table and ask students to work out how to share crackers fairly among three toy animals.
