What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify what is known, what is being asked, and which strategy might work. They try, check, and revise their approach when progress stops. They explain their reasoning, use feedback, and track a problem-solving goal.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can identify the goal, choose a strategy, and keep a clear record of attempts. When stuck, the student tries another representation, checks progress, and asks a focused question before giving up.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat the first failed attempt as proof that a problem is impossible. They may rush into calculations without identifying the question or checking whether an answer makes sense. Some ask for an answer instead of asking for help with a specific step.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Use 2, 3, 4, and 5 once each to make 26. Record two attempts and explain one change you made.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 24 tiles to build every possible rectangle, recording attempts and explaining how they know none are missing.
Ask students to describe a failed first attempt and write what they would change before trying again.
Play Strategy Switch, where students draw a card requiring a table, diagram, equation, or guess-and-check approach.
Have students compare two phone plans for different data amounts, revise incorrect calculations, and recommend the better plan.
