What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify what a problem tells them and what they need to find. They choose a strategy, keep working when the first attempt fails, and check whether the answer fits.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can model an unfamiliar problem with counters, a drawing, or an equation. The student explains each step, changes strategies after getting stuck, and checks the result against the story.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may grab the numbers and add them without thinking about the story. They may stop after one failed attempt, copy a classmate's method, or accept an answer that does not fit.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “Lena had some stickers. She got 4 more and now has 11. How many did she start with?” Ask students to show a model, label the unknown, and explain how they checked their answer.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 12 counters and a hidden-part story; students build the situation, solve it, and rebuild if their model fails.
Students draw and label a solution, then answer, “What did you try first, and what did you change when you got stuck?”
Play Strategy Swap: partners solve a story problem, trade papers, and add a different drawing, equation, or counting method.
Tell students 15 glue sticks are needed but only 9 are in the bin; they find how many more to collect and check.
