What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice how numbers, shapes, and operations are organized. They use place value, repeated groups, known facts, and patterns to solve problems more efficiently.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can break 47 into 40 and 7, use a known fact inside a harder problem, and explain why the method works. The student also recognizes repeated groups, shape parts, and patterns in number sequences.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may notice a visual pattern but miss the number relationship that creates it. They may also break apart numbers incorrectly, such as treating 43 as 4 and 3 instead of 40 and 3.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Solve 38 + 27 by breaking apart the numbers. Show how the parts helped you find the sum.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs base-ten blocks to build 36 and 28, then rearrange tens and ones to find the total.
Ask, “How could knowing 8 + 2 help you solve 8 + 7?” Have students draw and explain their thinking.
Play Pattern Detective with number cards, where students identify the rule, name the next number, and justify their answer.
Use an egg carton to show two rows of six, then connect the arrangement to repeated addition and doubles facts.
