What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose a math tool that helps them solve a problem, then use it correctly. They explain why it fits and try another tool if needed.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student selects a tool that fits the numbers and the task. The student uses it correctly, explains the choice, and switches tools when needed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may grab the most familiar tool even when it makes the task harder. They may also use a tool incorrectly or think every problem needs one.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket: “Solve 47 + 28. Choose one tool from base-ten blocks, counters, or a number line. Explain why it helped.”

Ways to Teach It
Set out counters, base-ten blocks, number lines, rulers, and clocks; have pairs choose tools to solve labeled task cards.
Ask, “Would a ruler or connecting cubes better measure your desk, and why?” Students write two sentences, then compare answers.
Play Tool Match: students draw a problem card, name the best tool, and earn a point by explaining their choice.
Set up a class store where students choose coins, drawings, or addition strategies to find totals and change.
