What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose from tools such as calculators, rulers, graph paper, spreadsheets, and physical models based on the problem. They use the chosen tool accurately and explain how it helps.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a problem, students select a useful tool and explain why it fits the task. They use the tool correctly, label results, and check whether the answer is reasonable.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reach for a calculator even when mental math or a sketch is faster. They may trust a graph or calculator result without checking scale, rounding, units, or entry errors.
How to Assess It
- Give students this exit ticket: “A phone plan costs $25 plus $8 per gigabyte. Choose a tool to find the cost for 12 gigabytes, solve, and explain why your tool fits.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a ruler, graph paper, calculator, and tiles to model a square root, then compare which tool gave the clearest result.
Ask students to write which tool they would choose to compare two linear functions and explain why another tool would be less useful.
Create tool-match cards with problems and tools, then have teams pair them and earn points by defending each choice.
Have students compare two phone plans using a spreadsheet or graph, then explain how their chosen tool helped identify the better deal.
