What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose a math tool that fits the problem, such as counters, a number line, a drawing, or a ten-frame. They use it correctly and explain how it helped.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student selects a useful tool without being told which one to use. The student models the problem accurately, solves it, and explains why the tool worked.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may grab a familiar tool even when it does not fit the problem. They may count objects twice, misuse a number line, or think only one tool can work.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Mia has 8 cubes and gets 5 more. Choose a tool, solve, and show how the tool helped.”

Ways to Teach It
Set out counters, ten-frames, number lines, and cubes; students choose one to solve 7 + 6 and explain their choice.
Partners discuss whether a ruler or counters better solves 9 minus 4, then explain why.
Play Tool Match: show a math problem, and students hold up a card naming the tool they would use.
Run a class store where students use coins, counters, or drawings to find how many items they can buy with 10 cents.
