What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students stay with a challenging problem, try useful strategies, and explain their reasoning. They work with others, ask for focused help, apply feedback, and monitor a math goal.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student tries another strategy when stuck and explains why the new approach may work. They share reasoning, ask specific questions, use feedback to revise, and track a clear math goal.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think persistence means repeating the same failed method. They may see asking for help as giving up, or treat feedback and goal setting as separate from solving math.
How to Assess It
- Give one challenging multistep problem and ask students to submit their work with three notes: strategy tried, change made, and next goal.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a difficult tile pattern task, strategy cards, and counters, then require two attempts before requesting a hint.
Ask students to write: What did you try, where did you get stuck, and what useful question could you ask?
Play Strategy Switch, where teams solve a problem, draw a new strategy card, and continue using a different representation.
Plan a class party budget, revise the plan after a surprise cost, and record how feedback changed the calculations.
