What Students Need to Do
- Students notice useful features in numbers, operations, models, and shapes. They break complex problems into familiar parts, use patterns or properties, and explain how those parts connect.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students decompose numbers accurately, connect models to equations, and use repeated features to solve problems. They can explain why their chosen shortcut or pattern works.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may split 34 into 3 and 4 instead of 30 and 4. They may follow a pattern from one example without checking whether it still works, or miss familiar shapes when they are rotated.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Solve 8 × 27 by breaking apart 27. Show both partial products and explain how the parts connect to the original problem.

Ways to Teach It
Give students base-ten blocks to build 6 × 23, split 23 into 20 and 3, then record both partial products.
Ask, “How does place value help you calculate 7 × 34?” Students explain the two smaller products they see.
Play Structure Sort: students match multiplication expressions, area models, and equivalent expanded forms, then justify each set.
Plan 24 snack bags with 6 crackers each, splitting the bags into groups of 20 and 4 to calculate the total.
