What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students stay with a math task, try another approach when stuck, and explain why their strategy makes sense. They work with a partner, ask clear questions, and use feedback to revise. They set a small goal and check their progress.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student uses counters, a drawing, or an equation and keeps working after an error. The student explains a choice, listens to a partner, and revises the work when needed. The student can name a goal and check whether it was met.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think being good at math means answering quickly or never making mistakes. They may ask for the answer instead of asking about a confusing step. During partner work, one student may do all the thinking.
How to Assess It
- Give students 8 + 7 and ask them to solve it two ways. Have them circle where they persisted, used help, or changed their work after feedback.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 12 counters and two cups, then challenge them to show and record three ways to split 12.
Ask, “What did you try when your first plan did not work?” Students draw or write, then share with a partner.
Play Strategy Switch, where students solve an addition card and earn a point by showing another method after peer feedback.
Plan a class snack count, then have students compare plans, ask for help, and revise any counting mistakes.
