What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn a familiar problem into counters, a drawing, a number line, a table, or an equation. They use the model to solve and explain how each part matches the situation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student chooses a model that fits the problem without being told which one to use. The model shows the correct quantities and supports a reasonable answer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may draw a picture that does not show the quantities or their relationship. They may choose addition whenever two numbers appear, or write an equation that does not match their model. Some find an answer but cannot explain what it means in the situation.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “There are 8 birds on a fence. Then 3 fly away. Show the situation with a drawing and an equation, then circle the answer.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 10 linking cubes to model and solve, “Six are red and the rest are blue. How many are blue?”
Display a counter model and a drawing for the same story, then ask students to write how both show the quantities.
Play Model Match: students match story cards with picture, number line, and equation cards, then explain one match to a partner.
During snack count, ask students to model how many napkins are needed, compare that with the stack, and find the difference.
