What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn a real situation into numbers, diagrams, tables, graphs, or equations. They use the model to answer a question, then check whether the answer makes sense in context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student identifies relevant quantities, chooses a useful representation, and explains any assumptions. The student solves accurately, labels units, and revises the model when results do not fit the situation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may include every detail, even when it does not affect the answer. They may calculate correctly but omit units, ignore limits, or accept an unreasonable result.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A class has $120 for notebooks costing $3.75 each, plus a $15 delivery fee. Write and use a model to find the greatest number they can buy.
