What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn real situations into models using objects, drawings, number lines, or equations. They solve with the model and check whether the answer makes sense.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose objects, drawings, number lines, or equations that match a situation. They use the model to solve and explain what each number means.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may draw every detail instead of showing the quantities and actions that matter. They may write an equation that does not match their drawing or forget to label what the answer represents.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Mia has 27 stickers and gives away 9. Draw a model, write an equation, and label the answer.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 24 counters and a bus mat, then have them model 9 riders leaving and record a drawing and equation.
Ask, “How does your drawing show what happened in the story?” and have students explain each number in their equation.
Play Model Match with story, picture, and equation cards, asking students to find and justify sets of three that belong together.
Use the daily attendance count to model how many students are present, absent, and enrolled with a drawing and equations.
