What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare several calculations and notice a repeated change or result. They use what repeats to predict answers, choose shortcuts, and check their work.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students spot what stays the same across several calculations. They use that pattern to solve a new problem and explain why their shortcut works.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may notice a visual pattern but miss the repeated calculation behind it. They may make a rule from one example or apply a correct rule where it does not fit.
How to Assess It
- Give students 26 + 10, 36 + 10, and 46 + 10. Ask them to solve, state what repeats, and predict 56 + 10.

Ways to Teach It
Build several two-digit numbers with base-ten blocks, add ten to each, and record what changes and what stays the same.
Ask, “What happens every time you add an even number to an even number?” Students test examples and write a claim.
Play Pattern Detective by showing three related equations and having teams identify the rule, predict the next equation, and check it.
Use weekly savings amounts to create a table, find the repeated increase, and predict how much money will be saved later.
