What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice when the same calculation or step happens several times. They describe the pattern and use it as a shortcut or rule for a new case.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify a repeated step, explain it clearly, and use it to predict another result. They test their rule with an example and revise it if needed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may claim a pattern after seeing only one or two examples. They may notice changing answers but miss the repeated operation that causes the change.
How to Assess It
- Show 4 × 3 = 12, 4 × 4 = 16, and 4 × 5 = 20. Ask students to predict 4 × 6 and explain what repeats.

Ways to Teach It
Build one through six rows of four counters, record each total, and describe what repeats.
Ask students to write how knowing 5 × 6 helps them solve 6 × 6 and 7 × 6.
Play a multiplication chart hunt where pairs find, mark, and explain three number patterns.
List the cost of one through five $3 notebooks, then use the pattern to predict the cost of eight notebooks.
