What Students Need to Do

Students identify physical and human features that make places alike or different. They group places into regions and explain the shared features used.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can label features on a map and sort locations by climate, landforms, population, or culture. They can explain why one place may belong to several regions.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think regions have fixed borders or must follow state lines. They may also confuse physical features, such as rivers, with human features, such as roads.

How to Assess It

Give students descriptions of three places. Ask them to group two into a region, name the shared feature, and explain why the third does not fit.

   Give groups Florida maps and feature cards, then have them create and label regions based on landforms, climate, cities, or agriculture.

   Ask students to write: What features make our community different from another place in Florida?

   Play Region Sort by having teams group place cards and defend each grouping with one shared feature.

   Compare weather reports, crops, and tourism ads from two Florida locations to show how geography shapes work and recreation.
