What Students Need to Do: Students name the Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest, and West. They locate each region on a United States map and sort states using the class reference map.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students label all five regions correctly on an unlabeled map. They place familiar states, including Florida, New York, Texas, and California, in the correct regions.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse the Midwest with the central western states. They may place Texas in the Southeast or call every state near an ocean a coastal region. Regional boundaries can vary, so students should use the assigned class map.
How to Assess It: Give students an unlabeled regional map and ask them to label all five regions. Then have them name the region containing Florida and Texas.

Lesson moves

Give pairs state cutouts and five labeled region mats, then have them sort the states using a reference map.
Ask students to write which region they live in and describe its location using north, south, east, or west.
Play Region Relay by showing a state card and having teams point to its region on a wall map.
Use five city weather reports and have students locate each city, name its region, and compare the forecasts.
