Florida SS.K.G.2

SS.K.G.2 is a Florida social studies standard. These are the benchmarks under it.

  Locate and describe places in the school and community.

• SS.K.G.2.2

  Know one's own phone number, street address, city or town and that Florida is the state in which the student lives.

What Students Need to Do

Students identify familiar places, including home, school, neighborhood, city, and state. They describe places by their location, features, and seasonal weather.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can locate familiar places on a simple map or model. They can name their city or town, identify Florida as their state, and explain how weather affects daily choices.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse a city, state, and country. They may think places are only buildings or confuse daily weather with seasonal changes.

How to Assess It

Show a simple community map and a seasonal weather picture. Ask students to point to one place, describe it, and name one way the weather affects people there.

   Build a tabletop school model with blocks, then label the classroom, office, cafeteria, and playground.

   Ask, "How is our classroom different from the playground?" Have students name one feature of each place.

   Play Place Clue Bingo with picture cards showing homes, schools, parks, cities, Florida, and seasonal weather scenes.

   Use the local forecast to choose suitable clothes and a recess activity, then explain each choice.
