What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify familiar places from pictures, maps, or direct observation. They describe where each place is and what people do there.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can point to a named place on a simple school or neighborhood map. The student can describe its location and purpose using clear words.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name an activity, such as eating, instead of naming the cafeteria. They may place locations randomly or confuse position words such as near, far, left, and right.
How to Assess It
- Give students a simple school map and say, “Circle the library. Tell me what is near it and what people do there.”

Ways to Teach It
Build a school floor map with blocks, then place picture cards for the office, library, cafeteria, and playground.
Show a community photo and ask, “What place is this, and what clues helped you know?”
Play Mystery Place by giving location and purpose clues while students point to the matching spot on a simple map.
Take a short school walk, stopping at three locations for students to name each place and explain what happens there.
