What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify physical and human features that make an area distinct. They compare areas and explain how landforms, climate, resources, settlement, and culture shape them.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can group places into regions using clear criteria. They can support a comparison with accurate map details and explain that regional boundaries may vary.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every region has fixed official borders or that all people within it share the same culture. They may also confuse physical features, such as rivers, with human features, such as roads.
How to Assess It
- Give students a U.S. map and ask: “Choose two regions, name one physical and one human feature of each, then explain one difference.”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups U.S. maps and feature cards to sort by region, then ask them to label the evidence used for each choice.
Ask students to write: “Which feature most shapes life in this region, and what map evidence supports your answer?”
Play Region Riddle, where students identify a region from three clues about climate, landforms, resources, or culture.
Have students plan a move from Florida to another region and list three changes their family would need to prepare for.
