What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students show joining and separating situations in more than one way. They use counters, fingers, pictures, actions, words, or number sentences to match what happens.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a simple story, a student chooses addition or subtraction and models the action accurately. The student counts the result and explains what the numbers and symbols represent.

Common Misconceptions

Students may count both groups but miss the joining or taking-away action. They may recount objects already removed or confuse which operation matches the story.

How to Assess It

Give each student six counters and say, "You have six bears, and two walk away." Ask students to model, draw, and tell the matching math sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs ten counters and story cards, then have them build each starting set, act out the change, and count what remains.

  2. Ask, "How could we show four birds with one flying away?" and record students' drawings, gestures, words, and equations.

  3. Play Roll, Build, Change: students roll a die, build that many cubes, draw a plus or minus card, and model the change.

  4. At snack time, place five crackers on a plate, add or remove some, and ask students to explain what happened mathematically.
