CCSS.Math.Content.K.OA.A.1

MathKUnderstand addition as putting together and adding to, and understand subtraction as taking apart and taking from.

The standard

Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.

What this standard means

Students need to show adding and taking away in many ways, not just say an answer. They can use counters, fingers, drawings, claps, acting, words, or a number sentence to match a simple story problem.

Mastery looks like matching the action to the operation. If 3 bears join 2 bears, students show 5. If 5 crackers become 2 after eating, they show 3 left. Students often get stuck when the story wording changes, or when they write numbers without showing what changed.

Ways to teach it

  • Hands-on activity: Give pairs five teddy bear counters and have them act out teacher-read joining and taking-away stories on a paper mat.
  • Prompt: Show 4 cubes and 1 more cube, then ask students to draw it and tell a partner what happened.
  • Quick assessment: Say, “There were 5 birds, 2 flew away,” and have students show it with fingers, then write or choose 5 minus 2.
  • Real-world connection: Use snack time to model, “You have 3 crackers, I give you 2 more,” then “You eat 1.”
