CCSS.Math.Content.K.OA.A.2
The standard
Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem.
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics · Operations and Algebraic Thinking
What this standard means
Students need to hear a simple story problem, decide if it is joining or taking away, and show it with objects, fingers, drawings, or a number sentence. They work within 10, so the focus is on meaning, not speed.
Mastery looks like matching the action in the story to the math, then explaining the answer in words. Students often get stuck when they listen for key words only, count the starting group again, or forget what the question asks.
Ways to teach it
- Hands-on activity: Give students 10 counters and read, “4 ducks swim over, 3 more join,” then have them build and count the total.
- Prompt: Ask, “How did you know whether to put more counters in or take some away?” after each story problem.
- Quick assessment: Show 6 cubes, hide 2 in a cup, and ask students to draw what happened and name how many are left.
- Real-world connection: Use snack pieces to tell, act out, and solve, “You have 5 crackers and eat 1, how many are left?”
