What this standard means

Students need to count objects accurately and say the total. They should handle objects in lines, arrays, circles, and small scattered groups. They also need to make a set when given a number, like putting out 14 cubes.

Mastery looks like one-to-one counting, steady number order, and knowing the last number tells how many. Students often double-count in circles or scattered groups, skip objects, or keep counting after the total. Some can count by memory but cannot build a matching set.

Ways to teach it

  • Hands-on: Give students 20 counters and number cards, then have them draw a card and count out that many counters on a mat. Эх
  • Prompt: Show a circle of 12 dots and ask, “How can we keep track so we count each dot once?”
  • Quick assessment: Place 10 scattered bears on a tray and ask the student to count them, then explain how many there are.
  • Real-world connection: Count snack crackers, crayons, or cubbies together, then ask students to make a group of a given number.
