The standard
When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object.
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics
What this standard means
Students need to count a set of objects by saying number words in the right order and matching each word to exactly one object. They should touch, move, point to, or mark each item once as they count.
Mastery looks like steady one-to-one counting with small groups, even when objects are spread out or arranged in a circle. Students often skip objects, count the same object twice, say numbers out of order, or move their finger faster than their words.
Ways to teach it
- Give each student 10 counters and an egg carton, then have them place one counter in each cup while counting aloud.
- Ask, “How can you make sure you count each bear once?” and have students explain their counting plan to a partner.
- Show 6 mixed objects for 10 seconds, then ask a student to count them by touching each one once.
- Count snack crackers before eating, moving each cracker to a new spot as one number word is said.
