What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find a missing whole number in an addition or subtraction equation. They solve when the unknown appears in any position and check that both sides are equal.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students find the missing number whether it appears at the beginning, middle, or end of an equation. They check the result by replacing the blank and showing that both sides have the same value.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat the blank as a signal to calculate the numbers beside it, rather than as a missing value. They may also assume the answer always belongs after the equals sign or confuse which operation will find the unknown.
How to Assess It
- Give students this exit ticket: “Fill in each blank and draw a picture to prove one answer: 7 + □ = 12, 9 = □ - 4, 6 + 3 = □.”

Ways to Teach It
Build 8 + □ = 13 with linking cubes, then add cubes until the train has 13 and record the missing number.
Ask students to explain in writing how they know the missing number in 10 = □ + 4.
Play Missing Number Match with cards showing equations such as 12 - □ = 7 and separate cards showing possible unknown values.
Use a covered snack bag: show 5 crackers, say there were 9, and have students find how many remain hidden.
