What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students organize measurements, make clear graphs, and describe patterns supported by the data. They compare results from different groups, identify limits, and use evidence to improve a procedure or design.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose an appropriate graph, label axes and units, and state a trend without overstating the evidence. They explain differences between data sets and suggest a specific change that improves accuracy, precision, or design performance.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat every pattern as proof of cause or ignore results that do not fit. They may confuse accuracy with precision, use uneven graph scales, or assume different group results mean someone made a mistake.

How to Assess It

Give students two small tables showing plant growth measured by different groups. Ask them to graph one set, name a pattern, compare results, identify one limitation, and propose one improvement.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Teams test paper helicopter designs, record three drop times, graph averages, then change one feature based on the results.

  2. Show two groups' results and ask, "Which claims are supported, and what might explain the differences?"

  3. Students match cards showing data tables, graphs, pattern statements, and limitations, then defend each completed set.

  4. Students analyze a week of local air quality data and decide whether outdoor practice should be moved or shortened.
