What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare datasets from groups investigating the same question. They identify shared patterns and differences, then use evidence to explain why findings may vary.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students check units, variables, sample sizes, ranges, and patterns before comparing results. They cite specific values and give reasonable explanations for differences between groups.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may expect groups to get identical results. They may compare graph shapes without checking scales or units, or assume any different result is a mistake.
How to Assess It
- Give students two plant-height datasets: Group A, 8, 10, 10, 12 cm, and Group B, 7, 9, 11, 13 cm. Ask for one similarity, one difference, and one possible reason.

Ways to Teach It
Teams measure ten leaves, graph their results, and compare findings with another team that measured leaves from the same plant.
Ask students to write: “Which differences between the groups matter, and which may come from normal variation? Use two data values.”
Play Data Match by giving pairs of tables and having students identify matching trends, different ranges, and possible measurement errors.
Compare temperature readings from two nearby weather stations and discuss how location, shade, equipment, or recording time could affect the data.
