What Students Need to Do: Students examine measurements from design tests and compare results with the stated criteria and limits. They use patterns in the data to choose a solution, propose a change, and plan another test.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can identify which design best meets all criteria, not just which has the highest score on one measure. The student supports a revision with specific data and names what should be measured during the next test.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat one successful trial as enough evidence or ignore unusual results. They may choose the strongest or fastest design while overlooking cost, size, or material limits. Some suggest changes based on preference rather than test data.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: Design A is 32 cm tall with 5 sheets, B is 28 cm with 3 sheets, and C is 35 cm with 4 sheets. The goal is at least 30 cm using no more than 4 sheets. Choose the best design, propose one change, and name the measurement needed to evaluate it.

Lesson moves
