What Students Need to Do: Students compare test results with stated goals and limits. They use patterns in tables, graphs, or repeated trials to choose a design. They then suggest a specific change based on the evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students identify which design best meets several goals, not just one. They cite relevant data and explain tradeoffs. Their proposed revision targets a measured weakness and can be tested.
Common Misconceptions: Students may choose the design with the highest single score while ignoring cost, safety, or other limits. They may treat one trial as conclusive or ignore unusual results. Some suggest changes based on preference rather than data.
How to Assess It: Give students a data table for three paper bridges showing load capacity, material cost, and mass. Ask them to select one design and name one evidence-based revision.

Lesson moves

Give teams one sheet of foil to build a boat, test penny capacity, record results, then revise one feature.
