What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students sort observations into categories, count each group, and display the totals in pictographs and bar graphs. They use titles, labels, scales, and keys. They answer questions by comparing the graph values.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can create an accurate graph from a small data table without help. They can identify the greatest, least, and equal values, then explain comparisons using numbers.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count each picture as one instead of using the pictograph key. They may use uneven bar widths or scales, omit labels, or confuse categories with quantities.
How to Assess It
- Give students a table showing 4 cats, 6 dogs, and 2 fish. Ask them to make a bar graph, then explain how many more dogs than fish are shown.

Ways to Teach It
Sort colored counters, count each color, build a cube bar graph, and draw a matching pictograph.
Show two graphs of the same data and ask, "Which graph makes comparisons easier, and what evidence supports your answer?"
Play Graph Detective by having partners draw question cards and find the answers on a posted graph.
Survey classmates about favorite recess activities, tally the responses, and create a labeled graph for the class bulletin board.
