What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students sort or order objects by one visible property, such as color, shape, size, or texture. They record results in simple tables or graphs and use the display to tell what they notice.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can choose one sorting rule, place every object correctly, and explain the rule. The student can read object graphs, picture graphs, and tables to identify most, least, same, and simple patterns.

Common Misconceptions

Students may switch sorting rules midway, such as sorting some buttons by color and others by size. They may miscount pictures, overlook labels, or confuse the biggest object with the group that has the most.

How to Assess It

Give each student eight mixed buttons. Say, “Sort by one property, make a picture graph, and circle the group with the most.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a tray of buttons to sort by one property, then have them build an object graph in labeled rows.

  2. Show a picture graph of favorite pets and ask, “What pattern do you notice, and what evidence from the graph supports it?”

  3. Play Sort Rule Detective: one student sorts blocks, and classmates name the single property used.

  4. Graph daily weather with picture cards for one week, then compare sunny, cloudy, and rainy days.
