What Students Need to Do: Students look at observations shown with objects, pictures, tallies, or simple charts. They notice what repeats, what appears most, and what changes.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can point to a pattern and describe it in words. They use the recorded observations to support what they say.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call one observation a pattern or focus only on the most noticeable object. They may guess instead of checking every picture, tally, or object.
How to Assess It: Show a picture graph of five days of weather. Ask, “What pattern do you notice, and what on the graph supports your answer?”

Lesson moves

Sort a tray of leaves by color, count each group, and ask students to describe what they notice.
Display a weekly weather chart and ask, “Which weather happened most, and how do you know?”
Play Data Detective by giving pairs picture graphs and statement cards to match using evidence from each graph.
Track daily playground shadows at the same time, then compare drawings to find what stays the same or changes.
