What Students Need to Do: Students read simple tables, tally charts, picture graphs, and sets of observations. They compare results and tell what repeats, changes, or goes together.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student accurately counts and compares the data. The student names a pattern or relationship and points to specific results that support it.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call one result a pattern or describe pictures without comparing the data. They may miscount graph symbols or assume that two changes prove one caused the other.
How to Assess It: Show a picture graph with five sunny, three cloudy, and one rainy day. Ask, "What pattern do you notice, and which numbers support your answer?"

Lesson moves

Give pairs daily weather cards to sort, graph, and use to identify the most common and least common weather.
Show a plant growth chart and ask, "What changed each day, and which measurements support your answer?"
Play Data Detective with simple graphs, awarding a point when teams name a pattern and cite matching data.
Record playground temperatures for five days, then compare warmer days with the clothing students wore outside.
